My Story

In December 2012, I was at a concert with my girlfriend, Gloria, when I suddenly collapsed. I woke up five days later in a medically induced coma, surrounded by machines, confused and unable to speak, walk, or even eat on my own.

What followed was the hardest chapter of my life. I went through months of physical, speech, and memory therapy, slowly relearning how to do everyday things most people take for granted. My family and friends were there every step of the way.

Recovery wasn’t a straight line. In 2014, I took a job printing phone cases but struggled with memory. Getting let go hurt, but it pushed me to keep trying. I later worked as a dishwasher at a bowling alley simple work, but it gave me stability and space to heal. Eventually, with Gloria’s encouragement, I applied for a job at Target, even though the idea of talking to people and handling cash terrified me. To my surprise, I thrived there.

I started at Pasadena City College in 2016 while working part-time. Through the Disabled Student Programs & Services (DSPS), I got extra support and time for exams as I continued to strengthen my memory. I graduated in 2018 and transferred to California State University, Northridge, drawn by Intersect LA, a student-run design agency that blended creativity, strategy, and collaboration.

Balancing work, school, and recovery wasn’t easy, but it taught me perseverance, patience, and gratitude. Every step since that night in 2012 has shaped who I am today: someone who refuses to give up, embracing growth, and finding meaning in creating and connecting with others.
